The HP Smart Tank 725 targets one of the recurring costs of home and small-office printing: replacement cartridges. Its integrated refillable ink-tank system ships with six bottles that HP rates for up to 18,000 black-and-white pages or 8,000 color pages, figures that translate to as much as three years of printing depending on usage.
The package includes three 135 ml GT53XL black-ink bottles, plus 50 ml GT52 bottles in cyan, magenta and yellow. Each tank has a dedicated refill point, and the bottles use an anti-spill valve system. Initial setup also involves fitting the black and color printheads, loading A4 paper and scanning an alignment page.
This is a print, scan and copy machine rather than an industrial printer. During several weeks of use, it handled document printing, scanning, copying and automatic double-sided printing. Black text output was reported as sharp, while the pigment-based black ink is described as water-resistant.

The Smart Tank 725 can be used without an HP account or subscription. Creating a free HP account through the HP app adds faster setup, mobile printing and scanning, remote monitoring and remote printing features. The app also displays estimated ink levels, offers diagnostics and includes options such as camera-based scanning and copying, photo printing, mobile fax and printable content.
Mobile-print support covers several services and platforms:
- HP app
- Apple AirPrint
- Mopria
- HP Print Service
- Wi-Fi Direct printing

For scanning, the printer uses a Contact Image Sensor. HP lists scan times of up to 19 seconds for a color A4 page at 200 ppi and up to 10 seconds for monochrome at the same resolution. The automatic printhead-maintenance function is designed to run while the printer remains connected to power.

Its combination of a large paper tray, duplex capability and unusually high claimed starter-ink yield makes the Smart Tank 725 most relevant to users with sustained document and color-print workloads, rather than occasional single-page jobs. International pricing and market-by-market availability were not confirmed in the material reviewed.
