Apple has introduced AirPods 5 in two versions, with active noise cancellation now included on the entry-level model. Apple says the new ANC system can remove up to 50% more external noise than the ANC-equipped AirPods 4.
The base AirPods 5 are priced at $129 in the US, while the $149 version adds Qi wireless charging. Preorders open September 9, and the earbuds are scheduled to reach US stores on September 18.
Both models use a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Their Transparency Mode has been tuned for more natural reproduction of voices and surrounding sounds, while Adaptive Audio can dynamically switch between noise cancellation and transparency modes.
Apple is also bringing Siri AI integration to both versions. When paired with an iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligence, the earbuds can provide hands-free access to personal information and contextual assistance. Head gestures for Siri remain available, and Live Translation can translate conversations through the earbuds. Those AI features require a compatible device, updated software and supported languages.
The higher-end AirPods 5 add a swipe gesture on the stem for volume control. Apple rates them for up to five hours of listening with ANC enabled, one hour more than AirPods 4 with ANC, and up to 22 hours with the charging case. That case supports USB-C, Qi charging and charging through an Apple Watch charger, matching an option already available on AirPods Pro models.
