The confirmation follows reports from owners whose approximately $2,000 foldable phones developed cracked inner displays within hours of use. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple engineers were seeking affected devices for analysis, although stores and support representatives had not initially received special guidance.

Apple has not explained what is causing the failures. iFixit has identified a potential concern involving the hinge's central support bar, which could place pressure on the flexible panel during folding. That remains an unproven theory, though reports have described cracking sounds or unusual resistance when opening the device before displays failed.

The company has not announced a recall. Its acknowledgment shifts the issue beyond isolated owner complaints, but it remains unclear whether the failures are tied to a defective hinge batch or a broader design vulnerability.
