A broken metal component inside an iPhone Duo hinge may help explain some reports of cracking on the phone’s folding inner display. In a teardown after a durability test, YouTuber CuriousHagi found the fractured part near the area where the panel had failed. The evidence is limited to a single heavily stressed device, so it does not confirm a cause for failures in ordinarily used units.

The device had been exposed to dust and its hinge was forced in the direction opposite to its intended fold. It later stopped closing fully; when it was reopened, a loud crack was heard and a white line appeared on the inner screen. The display defect resembled marks seen in images shared by other users.

After opening the phone, CuriousHagi identified a broken hinge linkage connected to the upper support plate. The piece appears thinner than neighboring components and broke at a narrowed section that could be a weak point. Marks in the mechanism and a corresponding mark on the rear of the display suggest that the detached part may have struck or pressed against the flexible panel.

The potential failure sequence is that the hinge binds, the metal part fractures, and the loose component applies pressure to the display. It broadly aligns with an earlier iFixit assessment that pointed to the central hinge area, where a support bar may not retract sufficiently during folding and could create pressure against the screen.

Apple has acknowledged inner-display issues affecting what it says is a small number of iPhone Duo units and has recommended replacement of defective devices through AppleCare. The company has not disclosed a cause or announced a recall. Whether the issue is confined to isolated units or requires a hinge-design change remains unresolved.
