Apple is preparing a software update for an issue affecting some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices. Following a failed Face ID authentication attempt, the affected phones can become completely unresponsive before automatically restarting a few seconds later.

The problem does not appear to affect every unit, but reports have been widespread enough for Apple to acknowledge it. In some cases, touch input stops working after Face ID fails, and iOS may later show a panic log in the Analytics section.

The reports drew added attention because the two Pro models use a redesigned Face ID system. Their infrared camera has moved beneath the display near the status-bar clock area, a change that reduces the visible Dynamic Island area by roughly 25%.

Some users initially suspected a hardware fault and replaced their phones, but Apple has characterized the issue as software-related and says device replacement is unnecessary. The company expects to release the fix early next week; it has not specified the exact update version or release date.
