Apple is reportedly testing an iPhone Duo 2 prototype with an under-display Face ID system, a change that could address complaints about the absence of facial authentication on the company’s first foldable. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the biometric hardware is being evaluated for a future version of the device.

The reported implementation would place Face ID beneath the screen by reducing the size of key components, including the dot projector and infrared camera. That approach could preserve the foldable’s display design while restoring Apple’s facial-recognition authentication method.

Early users have flagged the first iPhone Duo’s reliance on Touch ID as a limitation, particularly when the phone is held in an orientation that makes its fingerprint sensor harder to reach. Gurman also says Apple may add an Action Button to the next foldable, though neither the feature set nor a launch timeline has been confirmed by Apple.
