The BlackBerry Passport was selling well last time I checked, reaching over 200.000 units moved in a few weeks. In the meantime, what happens to most business or high end phones also happened to it: it has been customized by a luxury company and got gold plated.

Vietnamese company Mavang is doing the customization in this case. The square screen device comes with a stainless steel frame, that keeps everything together and this time the rim is also plated with 24 karat gold, a process that takes about 3 or 4 hours, including the disassembly time. The price of the customization is between $375 and $470, depending on the tweaking that the client wants done and how and where he wants the gold applied.

He can also request and engraving with a message or business logo. I wonder if you can also add diamonds to it, but for a premium, I’m pretty sure that can happen too. Since I’m not exactly familiar with the chemical process that coats the frame in gold, I can’t help but wonder if any of the gold will peel off in time…
