Dacia’s Sandero remained Europe’s most-registered new car in the first eight months of 2026, recording 145,424 registrations, according to Dataforce. The total put it 12,175 units ahead of the Volkswagen Golf, although Sandero registrations were down 11.2% from the same period in 2025.
Volkswagen’s Golf placed second with 133,249 registrations, narrowly ahead of the T-Roc on 132,845. Just 404 units separated the two Volkswagen models, while the T-Roc, Toyota Yaris Cross, Volkswagen Tiguan and Peugeot 2008 helped SUVs and crossovers account for five of the top 10 positions.

Tesla’s Model Y was the only battery-electric vehicle in the top 10, ranking fifth. Volkswagen placed three models in the chart, while Renault Group was represented by Sandero and Clio. Stellantis had three entries: the Peugeot 208, Peugeot 2008 and Opel Corsa.
The results also underline the continued strength of smaller cars alongside the SUV market. Sandero, Clio, Peugeot 208 and Corsa occupied four top-10 positions. Sandero’s lead, however, does not indicate year-over-year volume growth; it has retained first place while registrations have declined.
2026 Sandero adds a more powerful LPG option
Dacia said Sandero was Europe’s best-selling new car across all sales channels in both 2024 and 2025, and that it has led sales to private customers since 2017. The two measures are distinct, with the former covering all channels and the latter focused on retail buyers.
For the 2026 range, Dacia has introduced the Eco-G 120, a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline/LPG engine producing 120 hp, up from 100 hp. It can be paired with either a manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, giving the Sandero an LPG-and-automatic combination that was absent from the previous lineup. With four months of registrations still to be counted, the model remains in contention for a third consecutive annual European sales lead.
