Hewlett-Packard wants to take a break from its hit laptops and launch a hit smartphone, that will challenge the iPhone to a duel, as shown by Wall Street Journal, which cites the usual mysterious sources from the company.

We’re talking about an iPAQ branded device, so it’s going to be more business than pleasure and I really can’t imagine this device with a solid music player. Few specs so far and more suppositions, as you might’ve guessed that the new HP handset will feature a touchscreen, keypad and Windows Mobile 6.1.

It’s going to hit the European stores by the end of this year and be released globally soon after that, competing with the like of T-Mobile G1, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, BlackBerry Storm and of course the iPhone 3G.
