Huawei has announced that cumulative global shipments of its FreeClip open-ear headphone family have surpassed 10 million units since sales began in 2024. The milestone arrived alongside a new bicolor edition of the Huawei FreeClip 2, launched in China without changes to its hardware, features or battery life.

The new version pairs a yellow charging case with interchangeable decorative rings, pushing the ear-clip design further toward a fashion accessory. Buyers can switch among three color combinations.

  • Red and yellow
  • Blue and yellow
  • Red and blue

Huawei says the FreeClip figure covers the entire product family rather than sales of a single model. The result suggests continued traction for the open-ear category, which has expanded beyond conventional in-ear wireless earbuds and now includes similar designs from other manufacturers.

FreeClip 2 hardware remains unchanged

The bicolor edition retains the FreeClip 2's C-bridge, made from liquid silicone and a shape-memory alloy. Huawei says it is 25% softer than the bridge used on the first-generation FreeClip. Each earbud weighs 5.1 grams, and the headphones can automatically identify which ear they are worn on, eliminating fixed left and right units.

Audio hardware includes 10.8mm dual-diaphragm drivers and Huawei's third-generation audio chip with an AI NPU. Huawei claims twice the volume and low-frequency output of the original FreeClip, as well as a tenfold increase in the chip's stated computing capacity over its previous generation.

Other retained features include adaptive volume adjustment, voice enhancement, the L2HC codec and spatial audio with head tracking. The Chinese model also offers Xiaoyi-assistant translation, smart notifications and NearLink-based precision locating, though access to those services depends on the market and compatible devices.

Huawei rates the FreeClip 2 for up to nine hours of playback from the earbuds and up to 38 hours with the charging case. A 10-minute charge is claimed to provide three hours of music playback. The earbuds are rated IP57, while the case carries an IP54 rating.

The bicolor FreeClip 2 is on sale in China for CNY 1,299, matching the standard model's official price, with a temporary CNY 50 discount reducing it to CNY 1,249. Huawei has not confirmed whether this design edition will reach additional markets.

With the core hardware unchanged, the new edition is primarily a test of how far Huawei can extend the FreeClip's recognizable open-ear form factor through color and customization.
