Huawei’s Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design has now appeared in Richard Yu’s hands in its final form, putting its new folding mechanism beyond the realm of patent and render speculation. In a Weibo post from Richard Yu, the phone is shown being handled on camera, while Huawei again confirms a September 7 unveiling.
An earlier teaser pointed to a move from Z-folding to a U/G-style mechanism. The real device now shows the two outer sections folding inward, keeping the large flexible display protected when the phone is closed. Huawei has instead added a separate external display for conventional smartphone use.
That is a significant change from the Mate XT and Mate XTs. Their Z-folding arrangement could use part of the large internal panel as an outer display and supported an intermediate form factor. The new mechanism should offer better protection for the flexible panel, but appears to trade away some of that versatility. Huawei’s September 7 event should clarify which usage modes remain.
The exterior retains familiar cues: an octagonal camera module, a heavily textured rear panel, and Ultimate Design branding. The unit shown by Richard Yu has a deep purple finish. Earlier sightings had suggested that Yu was carrying a possible Mate XT 2, but the new official appearance removes the uncertainty.
Full specifications are being held for the event. Rumors have suggested a new Kirin processor, a larger battery and camera upgrades, but Huawei has not confirmed those details in this teaser. What is clear is that the Huawei Mate XT 2 will launch on September 7 alongside HarmonyOS 7, with its major hardware redesign already in view.
