Huawei Consumer Business Group chairman Yu Chengdong has urged iPhone users to pick up the Huawei Pura X View as a backup phone, arguing that its wide-screen design and HarmonyOS experience could ultimately make it their primary device. The remarks were made during the phone’s launch event in China, according to Huawei Central.

The Pura X View’s central selling point is its unusually wide display format. Its 6.39-inch screen provides a claimed usable area of 114.27 cm², which Huawei says exceeds that of the 6.9-inch display on Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max. The larger area is a result of the device’s broader aspect ratio, a concept Huawei previously explored with the foldable Pura X.

Huawei lists a 96.1% screen-to-body ratio for the Pura X View, alongside a 6.68 mm body and 201 g weight. It is powered by the Kirin 9030S chip and runs HarmonyOS 7.

The camera system includes a 200-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with 3.7x optical zoom and optical image stabilization. Huawei also highlights Pura-series image processing.

Huawei is also addressing a practical obstacle for iPhone owners considering a second handset: moving files between platforms. Yu demonstrated Huawei Share transfers between the Pura X View and an iPhone, presenting the feature as a way to exchange files without making file size or internet connection speed the central limitation.

The pitch is clearly promotional, and it appears chiefly aimed at the Chinese market. Still, Huawei’s approach is not simply to position the Pura X View as another conventional iPhone alternative: it is betting that a distinct wide-screen form factor, HarmonyOS 7 and cross-device file sharing can persuade Apple users to try the device alongside their iPhone. Whether that can translate into users switching their primary phone remains the key unanswered question.
