We’ve learned not to read too much into Apple patents, particularly since they don’t all turn into real life products. Today’s new patent has to do with Dual SIM and Caller ID Dual Standby, hinting at a potential dual SIM iPhone. For some this would be a blasphemy…

Traditionally Apple doesn’t offer dual SIM devices, although those would be hugely popular in China and India. The US Patent and Trademark Office published this patent application, revealing an iPhone, system and method to provide caller ID services in handsets using a Dual SIM Dual Standby wireless phone. If Apple does decide to deliver this tech, they would probably want to stand out of the crowd, with both SIMs offering LTE downloads at the same time.

This isn’t available on many phones, that make you pick between SIMs to use their 4G LTE connectivity. Keep in mind that the patent is rather vague and also refers to dual SIM portable gaming systems, Apple Watches, headphones, wearables and even MacBooks. The antenna setup would probably also have to change on this occasion, which may complicate matters.
