Samsung’s latest move in the tech landscape involves a collaboration with Tesla and Hyundai, bringing a new level of integration between smart home systems and electric vehicles (EVs). Announced ahead of CES 2024, this partnership aims to meld Samsung’s SmartThings platform with Tesla’s home energy products and Hyundai’s EV technology.

Under the partnership with Tesla, Samsung will enable users of Tesla’s EVs, Powerwall, and Solar Inverter to manage their home energy systems through Samsung’s SmartThings Energy app. This integration allows for monitoring of energy production, storage, and consumption. Notably, it includes functionalities like syncing Tesla’s “Storm Watch” feature with home devices, providing alerts for extreme weather conditions through connected Samsung TVs and smartphones. Users can also engage AI Energy Mode during power outages to optimize Powerwall energy use.

Tesla’s recent release of its “FleetAPI” app, which facilitates third-party interactions with its Powerwall, Solar, and Wall Connector products, has paved the way for this collaboration. Samsung, a leader in consumer smart home technology, is among the first to utilize this opportunity.

Samsung’s partnership with Hyundai focuses on expanding SmartThings to Hyundai’s EVs, enabling “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services. This integration permits control of Hyundai vehicles through the SmartThings app, including starting the car, adjusting air conditioning, and monitoring charging status. Conversely, users can manage home appliances from their Hyundai car’s infotainment system. Features like automatic activation of home lights and climate control upon the car’s arrival or setting car temperature in response to a smartphone alarm are part of this integration. This system also allows for monitoring and optimizing EV charging based on various factors like energy pricing and solar panel data.

Although still in development, Samsung plans to provide a preview of these new functionalities at its CES 2024 booth. This collaboration signifies a significant step in linking home energy management and EV technologies, offering enhanced convenience and control to users.
