Several private equity firms reportedly examined whether Microsoft’s Xbox business could be acquired in a deal valued between $100 billion and $150 billion. The review did not progress to a formal offer or negotiations with Microsoft, according to The Information, and the identities of the investors were not disclosed.

The reported valuation would place Xbox among the largest potential transactions in gaming. At the top end of the range, it is nearly three times the $55 billion paid for Electronic Arts in August 2026 by a consortium comprising PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners.

A central unknown is what any proposed transaction would have included. Xbox now spans far more than its console hardware, encompassing subscription, cloud, studio and game-franchise operations.

  • Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming
  • Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard and King studios
  • Franchises including Call of Duty, Minecraft, Halo, Diablo and The Elder Scrolls

Microsoft has publicly rejected the prospect of a sale. Xbox chief Asha Sharma said in a New York Times interview only weeks before the report that the business was not on the market.

Xbox is not for sale. We will do whatever is necessary to prepare the company for success.

Fortune has reported that some current and former employees believe Xbox could be preparing for a sale, a separation from Microsoft or an outside investment. An internal presentation reportedly considered such scenarios, though no option was approved. Microsoft commercial chief Judson Althoff has also dismissed the speculation, arguing that Microsoft would not install one of its most highly regarded executives to lead a business it intended to sell.

Reorganization and financial pressure

The reported investor interest comes as Xbox undergoes a broad restructuring. Microsoft began a program in the summer that called for about 3,200 job cuts, while multiple studios have been separated, sold or reorganized. A further round of layoffs was confirmed in October, alongside the shift of the Halo franchise under Activision’s oversight; additional reductions were reportedly planned for November and January.

Xbox generated $21.79 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue, down 7%, according to Microsoft’s SEC filings. Hardware revenue fell 29%, while content and services revenue declined 5%.

Microsoft is continuing that reorganization while developing its next Xbox generation, known as Project Helix. For now, the reported $100 billion-to-$150 billion range reflects exploratory investor calculations rather than a confirmed sale plan, and the assets that could have been included remain unspecified.
