RedMagic has confirmed that its forthcoming RedMagic 12 series will use a ninth-generation under-display front camera, continuing the ZTE gaming brand’s push for an uninterrupted screen design. Brand manager Jiang Chao said the series will be the first to use this version of the technology, which RedMagic says reflects roughly five years of development.
The new system is intended to make the camera area less noticeable while maintaining selfie quality and display uniformity. Under-display cameras must balance pixel density and light transmission: the OLED panel needs to render content above the sensor while still allowing enough light to reach it. RedMagic is targeting a more seamless full-screen appearance without a notch or punch-hole interrupting games and video.
The company has used under-display selfie cameras since the RedMagic 8 series. Its previous RedMagic 11 Pro and RedMagic 11 Pro+ paired a hidden 16 MP front camera with a 6.85-inch BOE X10 AMOLED display, 1.5K resolution and a 144 Hz refresh rate. They also used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, while the Pro+ reached configurations of up to 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Wi-Fi 7 and a 3.5 mm headphone jack were also part of the gaming-focused specification set.
RedMagic has not yet announced the RedMagic 12 series’ display resolution, refresh rate, processor, battery capacity, rear-camera hardware or launch date. The key unanswered questions are how inconspicuous the camera zone will be in everyday use and whether the ninth-generation system materially improves selfie results as well as screen uniformity.
