Samsung is reportedly evaluating a Galaxy Z Fold 9 design measuring 7.9mm when folded and 3.9mm when unfolded, a major reduction from the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s 9.7mm and 4.5mm dimensions. The claim comes from tipster kro_roe and remains unconfirmed by Samsung.
| Device | Folded thickness | Unfolded thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 | 7.9mm, reportedly under consideration | 3.9mm, reportedly under consideration |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 | 9.7mm | 4.5mm |
| Apple iPhone Duo | 11.3mm | 5.2mm |
If Samsung reaches those targets, the Fold 9 would be 1.8mm thinner while closed and 0.6mm thinner when open than its current Fold model. The reported dimensions would also put it below the cited iPhone Duo measurements in both configurations. Apple’s foldable supports stylus interaction, while Samsung dropped stylus support in pursuit of a thinner profile.
The leak also points to a possible return of Samsung’s under-display selfie camera on the Fold 9’s inner screen. Samsung used the technology for four Fold generations, beginning with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and ending with the Galaxy Z Fold 6, before switching to a conventional display cutout that delivered better selfie-image quality.
The Galaxy Z Fold 9 is not expected to arrive until summer 2027, leaving substantial time for Samsung’s plans to change. Whether the company can deliver the claimed thickness reduction while restoring the concealed inner camera is the key question ahead of its expected debut.
