Sonos will let owners of two compatible portable speakers use them as rear surround channels simply by placing them near a TV. The Portable Surrounds feature arrives with Sonos 27 on September 8, 2026, requires no additional subscription, and is designed to return the speakers to portable use when they are moved away from the home-theater setup.
The feature requires a matching pair of either Sonos Move 2 or Sonos Play speakers, paired with a supported soundbar: Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra, or Beam (Gen 2). Roam and Roam 2 are not included in the launch compatibility list, and updating to Sonos 27 alone will not enable Portable Surrounds on every existing Sonos system.
Portable Surrounds relies on Sonos Positioning Technology and the company’s new Sonos Fabric infrastructure. The speakers exchange high-frequency audio signals to determine their relative location and distance, allowing the system to assign left and right rear-channel roles automatically rather than requiring a manual surround reconfiguration.
Sonos says the positioning process generally uses frequencies between 18 kHz and 22 kHz. For Beam (Gen 2), the stated range is 16 kHz to 22 kHz. The signals are played at low levels and much of that range is difficult for adults to hear, but Sonos notes that people or animals with sensitive hearing may still perceive them.
Portable Sonos speakers have previously been unable to serve as surround units in a Sonos home-theater system. The update gives the Move 2 a new role after launch, while allowing a pair of portable speakers to shift between room-to-room listening and temporary rear-channel duty without being permanently assigned behind a sofa.
The September 8 release will be the first concrete deployment of Sonos Fabric’s location-aware device roles. Whether Sonos expands Portable Surrounds support to other portable speakers or soundbars remains unconfirmed.
