Google has opened Android Auto game publishing beyond its limited beta, allowing developers to release compatible titles through Google Play without obtaining special approval. Games remain restricted to parked vehicles, a safeguard intended to prevent play while driving.
Around 30 games currently support Android Auto. The expanded publishing access could increase that number, particularly for drivers and passengers looking for something to play during stationary time such as electric-vehicle charging stops.
Developers targeting Google’s in-car platforms must account for separate Android Auto and Android Automotive OS compatibility paths. There are currently more game titles available for Android Automotive OS than for Android Auto.
- Declare compatibility separately for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS.
- Adapt the game interface to different in-car display sizes.
- Detect whether the vehicle is parked or moving so gameplay is unavailable in motion.
- Support compatible controllers, which Google permits on both Android Auto and Android Automotive OS.
Compatible games can now be submitted directly through Google Play’s open-testing and production channels. Google’s developer documentation outlines the technical requirements for parked games.
