Apple may market its first foldable handset as the iPhone Duo, adding a third reported naming option alongside iPhone Fold and iPhone Ultra. The final commercial name has not been confirmed.
The device is expected to use a side-opening, book-style design rather than a compact clamshell format. Current reports place it alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at Apple’s expected September 9 event, although Apple has yet to announce the product or its launch plans.
Duo would not be entirely new territory for Apple. The company sold PowerBook Duo laptops during the 1990s and later released the MagSafe Duo charger. For a folding phone, the name could refer to the two halves that close together.
There are branding complications with each candidate. Microsoft previously used Surface Duo for its dual-screen phones, while Intel used Core Duo for processors. Fold and Ultra are also heavily associated with Samsung’s foldable and flagship Galaxy lines.
iPhone Ultra would fit more directly with Apple’s current naming, which includes Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra and high-end M-series chips. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously reported that some Apple employees refer informally to the foldable as the “iPhone Ultra,” but that internal shorthand does not establish the retail name. Apple’s September event, if the foldable is included, should settle which label reaches the market.
