Just as RIM was announcing its partnership with HP and added a push API, Google announced that some BlackBerry owners will be able to use Gmail and Google Calendar plus Push services on their devices.

However, this feature is quite limited, since users will have to connect to BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances, that have to be backed by Microsoft Exchange. Also, only 250 users will be able to get Push Gmail on their BlackBerries per Enterprise Server instance, which is a very important downside.

Another problem is the fact that changes you make to your appointment list on your handset can’t be pushed back to Google Calendar, but there’s more trouble to cope with, since searching your Gmail messages requires a separate app. We’re better off without it…
