Ethernet cable length normally will not affect a home network’s rated speed until a run approaches 100 meters, the distance used in installation standards to account for signal loss, interference and synchronization issues. That limit is not a hard cutoff: a connection does not necessarily fail immediately after 100 meters, but reliability becomes less certain.

In a typical structured installation, the 100-meter channel consists of about 90 meters of solid cable routed through walls and up to 10 meters of flexible patch cables connecting devices to network outlets. Well-made, undamaged 3-, 10-, 25- or 30-meter cables should therefore have no meaningful effect on a 1Gbps connection.

Exceeding a cable’s certified distance does not always result in a smooth, predictable speed reduction. A 10Gbps link may still come up, yet suffer packet retransmissions or instability; the connected hardware may then automatically negotiate a lower speed instead.

Ethernet Runs Can Reach 100 Meters, but 10Gbps Has a Cat6 Catch

Cable category alone cannot raise network performance. The router or switch, network adapter and internet service all need to support the same speed before a higher-rated cable can offer an advantage. For networks topping out at 1Gbps, Cat5e or Cat6 is sufficient, while moving to Cat7 or Cat8 will not automatically improve throughput.

For endpoints separated by more than 100 meters, the practical options are an intermediate Ethernet switch or fiber paired with compatible networking hardware or media converters. Long cable runs are also more consequential for Power over Ethernet, where voltage drop can leave the far-end device without enough power.
