Google has denied reports that it is reducing or removing AI Overviews from Search. The company says the AI-generated summaries are served dynamically and are not intended to appear for every query, meaning individual searches that return conventional links are not evidence of a broader rollback.

AI Overviews are shown dynamically and do not appear for every search.

Google said searches for a keyword or queries aimed at navigating directly to a specific website may not trigger an AI-generated response. Speculation about the feature spread after users reported seeing standard results instead of Gemini-generated summaries, but Google has not announced any plan to discontinue AI Overviews.

The rumors emerged alongside investor concerns over Alphabet’s latest financial results, including ad revenue that fell short of expectations and heavy spending on AI infrastructure. Those concerns have fueled questions about the economics of AI-powered search, although they do not establish that AI Overviews have been withdrawn.

Google has acknowledged a separate issue: AI Mode, its conversational Search experience, currently generates less advertising revenue than traditional search. Its growing usage has contributed to slower Search revenue growth even as the overall number of searches has risen. That disclosure applies to AI Mode and does not demonstrate a change in the availability of AI Overviews.

Alphabet reported that Google Search & other revenue rose 12% year over year, while paid clicks across the properties included in that category increased 8%. The figures are aggregated, however, and do not isolate the effect of AI Overviews on ad clicks.

Traffic concerns remain for publishers

The debate also matters to publishers tracking referral traffic from Google. An experimental study involving 1,100 participants found that hiding AI features in Search increased visits to external websites. In the condition that sent all searches to AI Mode, the click-through rate was 18.8 percentage points lower than in the standard experience. The result reflects the study’s test conditions rather than a universal traffic effect for every website.

Google’s latest product announcements point toward further AI integration rather than a retreat. On October 15, the company outlined more prominent source links and recent-article carousels for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It then announced on October 28 that ads in AI Mode would expand to additional markets. The key unanswered question is how Google will balance that expansion with the lower ad yield it has disclosed for conversational search.
