Samsung is reportedly developing a large foldable tablet that could offer a 17-inch display when opened and a form factor of roughly 8 inches when closed. The claim comes from X user kro_roe, who had previously referred to such a device without naming its manufacturer and now says Samsung has begun development.

The reported display measurements leave the device’s design unclear. Folding a 17-inch panel does not inherently produce an 8-inch viewing area, so Samsung could be considering an outward-folding screen with an active section available while shut, or an inward-folding primary panel paired with a separate external display. The latter approach would resemble the Galaxy Z Fold line, but adding a large cover screen could increase cost and complicate efforts to keep the hardware thin.

Samsung Display has already demonstrated foldable panels in this size range. At CES 2025, it showed an 18.1-inch foldable panel that could be used in a 13.1-inch laptop-style format when bent. The company had also shown a 17.3-inch foldable display in 2022, demonstrating that the underlying panel technology exists even if it has not yet been confirmed for a commercial tablet.

A retail device would still need to address hinge durability, flexible-panel protection, weight, battery life and software that can make effective use of the larger workspace. Samsung has not announced the project, and there is no confirmed launch timing, pricing or final hardware configuration.
