HONOR has confirmed that the Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max will use a 55MP square front-facing camera, branded Agile Eye. The company says it is the first square selfie camera on an Android phone, with the 1:1 sensor format intended to make portrait and landscape framing more flexible without rotating the handset.
A company teaser shows the camera switching between vertical and horizontal compositions while retaining a wide field of view. Rather than capturing separate portrait and landscape frames, the square sensor can provide room to crop a single image or video frame into either orientation—a potentially useful approach for selfie video and social-media content.
The confirmed 55MP specification also settles an earlier discrepancy. A Magic 9 prototype leak in May pointed to a 100MP square selfie camera, but HONOR has now publicly specified a 55MP unit for the Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max. It remains unclear whether the hardware changed during development or whether the earlier report was inaccurate.
The front camera is part of a broader imaging push for the upcoming Magic 9 line. HONOR has already disclosed several camera-focused features tied to its collaboration with ARRI:
- Two 200MP cameras developed around the ARRI collaboration.
- A 500mm teleconverter.
- ARRI Cinema Mode, alongside LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and the ARRI Look Library.
For now, the 55MP square camera is confirmed only for the Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max, not every model expected to carry the Magic 9 name. HONOR says details of the remaining variants will arrive with the full product announcement.
