Samsung is reportedly moving toward Android XR glasses that can place color information in the wearer’s field of view. The company has requested development of microdisplays measuring up to 0.2 inches for the device, which is currently expected in the second half of 2027, according to a 9to5Google report. Industry sources caution that the schedule could move into the first part of 2028.

The display is said to be intended for concise visual information rather than a large virtual screen. Text, notifications, icons and navigation arrows are among the expected uses, with simplified color rendering of roughly 4-bit gradation reportedly sufficient for those interface elements.

Samsung Display may propose either OLEDoS or LEDoS panels, with Samsung expected to weigh performance against cost. OLEDoS can meet the extremely small size requirements of an eyeglass frame, while a white OLED panel with color filters could be more practical for price and manufacturing yield than RGB OLEDoS. LEDoS could offer higher brightness, but producing a tiny full-color panel remains challenging.

A key hardware decision has not been made: Samsung could position the display in front of one eye or both. A binocular design could support 3D content, but would increase optical complexity, power consumption and cost. Achieving a sufficiently broad field of view is another unresolved technical challenge.

The display-equipped model is separate from Samsung’s first Android XR glasses, unveiled this summer. Those glasses follow a display-free formula closer to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, pairing a camera, microphones, open-ear speakers and Gemini without an in-lens screen.

The color-display glasses were previously linked to the SM-O500 model number after it appeared in One UI 9 files in April. If the reported timetable holds, Samsung’s product line could progress from AI-focused glasses without a display to a more capable model that overlays visual cues on the real world. The choice between OLEDoS and LEDoS, along with the monocular or binocular design, will determine how far that second step can go.
