Sony’s Xperia 1 IX could bring a larger main camera sensor than the current Xperia 1 VIII, a change that would mark the first shift in sensor size for the series’ primary camera since the Xperia 1 V.
The Xperia 1 VIII uses a 1/1.35-inch Exmor T sensor for its main camera, matching the sensor size used by Xperia 1 flagships since 2023. Details of the rumored replacement, including its resolution and exact physical size, have not yet emerged.
A larger sensor would reportedly require Sony to revise the rear camera hardware. The Xperia 1 IX is expected to use a more spacious square camera section to accommodate it. The Xperia 1 VIII already adopted a square-shaped camera-module design, although the next model could enlarge or otherwise rework that layout.

Increasing sensor size can improve light collection and give a camera system more headroom for low-light capture, noise control and dynamic range. Final image quality will still depend on the lens system and Sony’s image processing, so the hardware change alone would not guarantee better results.
Sony introduced the Xperia 1 VIII in May. If it maintains that annual schedule, the Xperia 1 IX may arrive around the same period next year, but Sony has not confirmed a launch date, specifications or market availability.
