Vodafone and Ericsson have tested live AI translation for ordinary phone calls, with the processing handled in the operator network rather than through a dedicated app or high-end handset. The trial translated calls involving English, German, Spanish, Italian and French.
The setup connects Vodafone’s AI platform and an application server with an AI gateway and Ericsson core-network technology, using APIs to link telecom functions with AI processing. The stated result is real-time voice translation during a conventional telephone call.
By moving the feature into the network, Vodafone and Ericsson are pursuing a different approach from on-device call translation systems. In theory, the service could be delivered to compatible network-connected devices without relying on a phone maker’s AI implementation or the processing power of an individual handset.
The trial also tested background-noise reduction at the network level, which could improve call clarity in loud environments. Vodafone has previously deployed network-based fraudulent-call detection, and the translation project extends that model of placing AI services in operator infrastructure.
Vodafone frames the work as part of its Core Network of the Future program. It remains a trial rather than a commercial launch: the companies have not announced a rollout date, pricing, supported markets or any languages beyond the five used in testing.
