Xiaomi is preparing an AI-driven upgrade for the secondary rear display on its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro series. Called Versatile Back Screen, the feature will let users generate small apps that run directly on the back of the phone, moving beyond a fixed selection of widgets.
Xiaomi has shown several examples of the kinds of tools users could create. Frequently used apps can be pinned to the rear display for quicker access.
- An egg-boiling timer
- Water-intake reminders
- A Pomodoro timer
- An English vocabulary memorization app
- Recipe recommendation cards

The system expands on the MiShare secondary display introduced with the Xiaomi 17 Pro last year. Xiaomi says users interacted with apps shown on that display more than 4 million times per day and added over 3.5 million wallpapers. Lu Weibing, president of Xiaomi’s phone division, has said that users have different needs for this kind of display.
With AI generation added, Xiaomi is positioning the rear screen as a space for personalized utilities rather than only notifications, selfies and wallpapers. The Xiaomi 18 Pro series is due to be formally unveiled later this month, with Xiaomi also signaling upgrades to performance, cameras, battery life and AI features.
