The iPhone 18 Pro’s headline camera change is a 48MP main sensor with a variable aperture, but reports surrounding Apple’s 2027 anniversary iPhone suggest the company may be preparing a more fundamental redesign only a generation later. That makes the 18 Pro look like a significant refinement of Apple’s current Pro formula rather than the start of a new one.
Apple is said to have retained the familiar 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes across the Pro range. A smaller Dynamic Island, new colors and internal updates distinguish the models, but the overall industrial design reportedly remains close to the preceding generation.
The new main camera can reportedly switch among f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4 apertures, with manual controls added for photographers. The f/1.48 setting should allow more light to reach the sensor, although variable aperture effects on a smartphone-sized sensor are unlikely to match the dramatic depth-of-field changes seen with dedicated cameras.
A larger shift is rumored for 2027
Reports attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman have described 2027 prototypes known as V73 and V74. They are said to use substantially more glass, curved surfaces flowing toward the edges and a thin metal band between the front and rear. Apple has not confirmed the devices or their final design.
The rumored anniversary hardware could also introduce changes beyond the exterior.
- An Apple-developed stacked camera sensor using LOFIC technology, reportedly capable of handling bright and dark portions of a scene more effectively and potentially reaching about 20 stops of dynamic range.
- Samsung OLED panels using Color Filter on Encapsulation, which could enable a thinner, brighter and more efficient display.
- Silicon-anode batteries, a second-generation 2nm A21 chip and high-bandwidth memory aimed at AI workloads.
None of those 2027 specifications is confirmed. The camera-sensor claim is particularly consequential if it proves accurate: a new sensor architecture would be a deeper change than the iPhone 18 Pro’s aperture mechanism, which evolves the existing imaging system.
The timing has fueled expectations. Apple will mark 20 years since the original iPhone in 2027, following the pattern set by the iPhone X, which arrived for the product line’s 10th anniversary and established a new design direction. Whether the next anniversary model carries out the rumored overhaul—and how Apple positions it—will remain unclear until the company announces its plans.
