Samsung may keep a 5x optical-zoom periscope camera on the Galaxy S27 Ultra after all. Leaker Ice Universe now claims the next Ultra model will use a 1/2.52-inch sensor for its 5x periscope unit, challenging a recent rumor that Samsung would move to a 4x telephoto system.
The earlier report described a 4x camera built around a larger 50-megapixel, 1/1.9-inch sensor. If the newer claim is accurate, Samsung would instead retain the same sensor format used for the current Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 5x telephoto camera.
A matching sensor size would not necessarily mean an unchanged camera. There is still no indication whether Samsung would reuse the exact component or introduce a new sensor in the same format, and details on resolution, lens optics and image processing have not emerged.
Separate rumors have suggested that Samsung could remove the 3x telephoto camera, potentially leaving the S27 Ultra with only one dedicated zoom module. That would make the final specification of the 5x camera more significant, particularly if the company is simplifying the rear camera array rather than adopting the previously rumored larger 4x sensor.
Neither telephoto configuration has been confirmed by Samsung, and prototype hardware can change before a device reaches launch. For now, the 4x-camera report can no longer be treated as the clear direction for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
