Huawei’s rumored Mate 90 Pro Max may use a 200MP periscope camera, but the sensor named in the latest leak comes with a major timing problem. The report identifies the component as SmartSens’ SCC85XS, while SmartSens says samples will not be available until December 2026 and mass production is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
That schedule is difficult to reconcile with reports that the Mate 90 series could be announced as early as September 23. If that launch window is accurate, the SCC85XS designation may be incorrect, may refer to a later device, or may not represent the final production camera configuration.
The leak, attributed to Digital Chat Station, also points to two 50MP SmartSens sensors for the Mate 90 series’ main cameras. SmartSens’ published specifications support several of the reported capabilities, although they also suggest the leak may be combining different HDR technologies.
- SmartSens SC575XS: a 50MP, 1/1.56-inch sensor built on a 22nm process. SmartSens lists LOFIC HDR 3.0, up to 110 dB dynamic range, 4K video at 120fps, and 4K HDR at 60fps.
- SmartSens SC595XS: a larger 50MP, 1/1.28-inch sensor. Its official specification page lists SuperPixGain HDR and up to 110 dB dynamic range, rather than LOFIC HDR 3.0.
- SmartSens SCC85XS: a 200MP sensor reportedly intended for the Mate 90 Pro Max periscope camera. SmartSens says it can produce 50MP images at 2x zoom and 12.5MP images at 4x zoom through on-sensor hardware pixel reconstruction, with up to 83 dB dynamic range, 4K 120fps recording, and 4K HDR at 60fps.
The SCC85XS is also notable because SmartSens describes its platform as being fully developed and manufactured in China, spanning chip design and fabrication. That positioning would align with Huawei’s broader effort to reduce reliance on external component suppliers, if the sensor ultimately reaches a commercial Mate device.
Recent imagery said to show Mate 90 camera modules has indicated a more crowded rear-camera layout for the Pro Max, including space for a periscope unit. It adds some context to the 200MP claim, but SmartSens’ stated production timetable remains the key unresolved issue ahead of any official Mate 90 announcement.
