Sony could buy the full stake in Sony Ericsson and become solely Sony, as the handset and tablet maker. The info comes from Wall Street Journal, that repors Sony’s intention to finish the deal started in 2001.

10 years ago, Sony started a joint venture with Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson and till now it has been a 50% – 50% affair. The result was one of the leading mobile phone makers, that in the past years has failed to innovat the market much. Not so many years ago, SE was known for great Cyber-shot cameraphones and Walkman music phones, but now they’re changing focus to smartphones from the Xperia series.

We’ve yet to see a dual core smartphone from SE, or a Windows Phone one, but once the Sony takeover takes place, things might change. Wall Street Journal quotes sources familiar with the matter on this one, but they might actually be wrong for once.
